LINKING VERBS

Động từ nối hay liên động từ (linking verbs) là một động từ khác hẳn với động từ chỉ hành động (action verbs); là các động từ dùng dùng để diễn tả trạng thái của chủ ngữ thay vì diễn tả một hành động. Động từ nối dùng để nối chủ ngữ của động từ với tính từ hoặc danh từ miêu tả hoặc nhận diện cho chủ ngữ. Sau động từ nối là một tính từ hoặc một cụm danh từ.

1. Sau động từ nối là một tính từ

- You seem happy.

- She sounded more confident than she felt.

2. Sau động từ nối là một cụm danh từ

- They remained good friends in spite of their quarrel.

- I will become Miss. Universe one day.

3. Một số từ nối thường dùng

become :

She becomes suspicious of everything they say.

He’s become a new star after the contest.

get:

It’s getting dark.

The theater gets dark when the show is about to begin.

grow:

Anna grows prettier every day.

He became suspicious when he saw the safe was open.

feel:

I feel worthy when the boss compliments me.

seem:

She seems happy after hearing the news.

It seems tough to get to the top of this mountain.

look:

The puppy looks so cute.

She looks immensely stunning in that dress.

smell:

The flowers smell sweet.

The eggs smell rotten.

sound:

You sound tired.

Your plans for the wedding sound nice.

taste:

The food tasted delicious.

The cake tasted delicious.

stay:

They still stay cold toward each other after the fight.

Remember to stay calm during the test.

remain:

She remains the mean girl as she always was.

The data remained unchanged over the time.

appear:

She didn’t appear at all happy at the news.

It appears that she failed the test.
