To-infinitives after nouns / adjectives

I. To-infinitives after adjectives

1. Động từ nguyên thể có to (to-infinitives) được sử dụng sau một số tính từ để chỉ về lí do.

Các tính từ dùng trong cấu trúc này là: glad, happy, lucky, amazed, surprised, proud, determined, pleased, sorry, disappointed, sad, afraid

2. Cấu trúc:

 Noun / Pronoun + linking verb + adjective + to-infinitive

Cấu trúc này nhằm đưa ra bình luận, nhận xét tính chất của hành động “làm gì đó thì như thế nào” hoặc “ai đó thấy như thế nào khi làm gì”.

- It was kind of you to help him.

- It was stupid (of them) to leave their bicycles outside.

- I’m curious to know what he said.

- It is interesting to talk to him.

- It is important for me to have confidence in myself.

II. To-infinitives after nouns 

* Động từ nguyên thể có to (to-infinitives) được sử dụng sau một số danh từ trừu tượng làm rõ nghĩa liên quan đến danh từ đó.

Các danh từ dùng trong cấu trúc này: advice , ability , ambition , anxiety , attempt , chance , decision , dream , failure , permission , plan , request , wish , way , urge , opportunity , pleasure , willingness ,....

- His advice to continue was good.

- She has the ability to achieve good grades at university.

- She finally achieved her ambition to visit South America.

- Peter's leaving at the end of this week - hence his anxiety to get his work finished.

- Her attempt to locate them was unsuccessful.

- The decision to increase taxes was not popular.

- Her dream to become an actress was never realized.

- As a result of his failure to pay the mortgage, his house was foreclosed.

- Permission to enter the area was difficult to get.

- Sandy's plan to move to Madrid bothered her parents.

- The boss refused our request to leave work early.

- Her wish to be treated normally was respected.

- One way to improve your English is to read novels.

- I had an urge to put salt into his tea when he wasn't looking.

- They gave him an opportunity to escape. 

- It's a pleasure (for us) to have you here.

- She shows a willingness to work on her own initiative.
